Job Title: Technical Training Instructor Department: Training Reports To: Administratively/Operationally: Regional Manager. Professionally, MTU FLSA Status: Exempt
Summary: Develops and conducts programs to train distributor technicians, customers, end users and company personnel on the repair, maintenance, and diagnostic procedures of MTU, MTU-DDC engines. Instruction involves extremely technical knowledge and procedures utilizing a considerable amount of creativity, knowledge, and initiative with a wide latitude for independent action by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned): *Conducts training classes for experienced technicians in servicing, minor and major repairs, through to complete overhauls of the engines FDDA sells and services to the marine market. *Training will include proper use of documentation, measuring techniques, and appropriate use of the specialized tools used to perform minor, major, and overhaul repairs of engines. * This will also include detailed explanations and demonstrations of fluid flow paths throughout the engines to reinforce the technician’s troubleshooting skills. *Teach up-to-date troubleshooting procedures and the proper documentation to use to provide the information in the troubleshooting and servicing process. *Conduct training for Customer/Mechanic and/or Owners of Motor Yachts in proper operation, service intervals, and minor repairs to the engines that are in their vessels. *Teach basic troubleshooting to enhance the knowledge of the proper fluids used in the operation the diesel engines. *Confers with management and staff or MTU’s / DDC’s Technical Training Coordinator and to determine training objectives. *Conducts training program, including outline, text, handouts, overhead illustrations, and tests, and designs laboratory exercises that will include hands-on opportunities for students to work on engines for the specific engine needs and specifically marine applications.. *Schedules classes based on demand, classroom, and student availability. May hold training classes at customer locations, based on specific needs and applications. *Lectures class on safety, installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of MTU and DDC engines following outline, handouts, and texts. Ensures safe, clean, and orderly maintenance of equipment, environment, and tools used in the training classrooms and laboratories. *Assists with customer relations by providing technical answers as may be requested, typically by phone support. *Demonstrates procedures being taught, such as electronic programming and mechanical repair and maintenance techniques. *Observes students in class and laboratory and answers students' questions. Upon request, provides ad lib telephone support to graduated students. *Administers written and practical exams and writes performance reports to evaluate trainees' performance. Issues certifications as earned and warranted. *Participates in meetings, seminars, and training sessions to obtain information useful to training facility and integrates information into training program. *Evaluates training equipment and makes recommendations as to their relevance to the material being taught. *Through the Training Administrator, sets up, organizes, and maintains files necessary for the operation of the Training School. *Performs special assignments as requested or required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises one employee (Training Administrator) in the Education Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; payroll processing to include time-off requests, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Associate's Degree in Diesel Engine Technology or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Additionally, factory training and manufacturers certification as “MTU – Engineer” highly desired. Vast technical knowledge of MTU-DD products.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common engineering and technical journals, and on-line bulletins associated with training courses offered.. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, in training opportunities. Ability to write and deliver lecture notes relevant to classroom protocols in a style that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, representatives from various manufacturers, students, and FDDA Management. English – Spanish – German language skills helpful.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as may be associated with engine operations to include volume, pressures, percentages, area, circumference, and all low voltage DC measurements (Volts, Amperes, Ohms, etc). Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Excel Spreadsheet software, Word for Windows Word Processing, PowerPoint Presentation, Picture Editor and Access software. Additionally must be very familiar with Internet usage (E-Mail and Browsers) and all types of supporting office equipment.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Preliminarily qualified for the various MTU Products & Systems Certifications (available post hire) Valid and current State of Florida Drivers' license or eligible
Other Skills and Abilities: Previous experience as a skilled Technician desirable - especially with much exposure to the MTU family of engines – 2 and 4-cycle, common rail, low voltage engine control systems, etc. Familiarity with adult learning theory to include some academic preparation as a teacher.
Other Qualifications: Must hold valid passport and be willing to travel outside of the country for training.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud when near running engines; otherwise, relatively quiet, office-like, conditions exist.
